Categories
1x30 image.BrainOp inquiries are posted to a hierarchical system of categories. They can be cross-posted to multiple categories--and all of this is exactly like the Usenet Newsgroups, if you happen to remember those. A top-level "transportation" category may contain an "air-fare" subcategory (as a rule, names must not contain spaces). In this case, the canonical name for that subcategory is "transportation.air-fare", using a period to delimit the two names, just like in the NewsGroups.

(You may be wondering, have I not just recreated the Usenet Newsgroups? No, actually, I'm going for something a bit more structured. Usenet, like the Internet herself, is a chaotic free-for-all. You can download files through the Newsgroups, split apart into multiple, BASE-64-encoded "posts". Or you can take pot shots, tell jokes and flame to your heart's content: these are activities so commonplace in the Newsgroups that seeking help, even with simple problems, can be futile. BrainOp is a question-and-answer forum specifically, and it tries to process inquiries so as to encourage responses.)

When searching for inquiries, a partial category name can be entered, and only inquiries within like named categories will be found. You can enter a partial ame or use the canonical, period-delimited form to search within a specific category.
